AWARDS:

 

 

 

KIDS CLUB:

·        Currently 40 kids are signed up.  There are also two high school age helpers and two parents attending.

·        This coming Saturday, Oct 10 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.in the Kuiper Space Sciences Building, the topic will be DNA with presenter Vuna Fa, a Space Grant Graduate Fellow

·        Volunteers are welcome and encouraged

·        December Kids club is still open

·        January and February are set up, but there is a need for a person with AIAA affiliation to unlock the building, 1-26 and 2-16.  Amy volunteers.

March Kids Club will be held at PAS.  Don Lacey will present, and the kids will build gliders

 

 

 

News from: ARIZONA SCIENCE TEACHER ASSOCIATION MEETING: Oct 18 and 19 2007

·        We sponsored an award for new teacher of the year in AZ.  We could follow this up by honoring our awardee at next distinguished lecturer event.

·        The Phoenix Section would like to interact with us.  Ideas:

o       Soaring

o       Meet at the gunnery range in Ajo

o       Shared event at Titan museum

o       Shared high profile distinguished lecturer 

·        National art contest open to all kids- theme next 50 years of flight- deadline Dec 1.  Last year we had 3 winners.

 

 

 

ENGINEERS WEEK (early February):

·        Held at Foothills mall

·        This event is an opportunity to hand out AIAA literature and sponsor an interactive display. Doug has ideas on specifics.

·        E-week has a history of minimal student involvement.  How can we change this?

·        Should we sponsor an AIAA table at Engineer Week banquet?  Matt is disenchanted, but not vetoing

 

 

 

DISTINGUISHED LECTURE EVENT:

Two requests:

            1)  L Scott Miller has been contacted and is interested.  The topic of his          talk is shadow craft: the history and present state of secret aircraft.

                        Could this be held in front of SR71 at Spirit of Freedom hanger at                                PAS?

           

            2)  Mark Adler of JPL has been contacted.  His topic is concerns Mars            exploration and the Spirit Rover.  Currently, no response to our request.

           

            Other ideas:

o       Possible joint event with Phoenix

o       Speakers not in book (list on webpage)

o       Sara to contact lady at Phoenix Mars Mission for Kids Club

o       Ideas are still welcome.  Email them to Matt.

 

 

 

STUDENT SECTION NEWS:

·        Students want to host distinguished lecture at UA; can be requested in addition to section requests; aiming for Feb.

·        Design/Build/Fly coming along, finalizing design

·        Tentative design review on Tuesday Nov 27

·        Idea to incorporate UA DBF team with March Kids Club.  The UA team will be in the build phase.

·        No news on Tucson Section sponsored event for students at the gunnery range.  Plans still in progress. 

·        Senior students need AIAA literature concerning professional membership.

·        Budget from Tucson Section to students for DBF- $750?  Students should submit a request.

·        Matt to find out about Raytheon funding for DBF.

 

 

 

AERIAL ROBOTICS:

·        Working on testing antenna

·        Flight test Friday

·        Possibility to unify and have only one Tucson team

·        Jeff to join officer ranks as young professionals chair

·        We should encourage people to get senior member after 8 years.  Frank to provide contacts who qualify.
