TREASURER:
- We have just over $1180.35 in checking
account as of 8-31-07.
- Hopefully we’ll get our reward money in October. I’m hoping for ~2K.
- Matt to reimburse Amy about $20.00.
- Hopefully Amy will be willing to take over
Treasurer Responsibilities.
HOMELAND SECURITY:

Conference in Monterey
was a success. AIAA co-sponsored event.

It was at the
Navy Post Graduate School.

It’ll happen
again in Monterey next year.

Sara saw some
gorgeous blond guy with Italian shoes, so she’ll go again.
KIDS CLUB:
- 1st Saturday’s of each month are
confirmed. Sara to send dates.
- Janurary Session: Serina will teach math magic
- February Session: Don McCarthy.
- October Session (6th): Brian Ewenson
- Sara will contact more people,
- LPL Phoenix Mars program may be a good option.
ARIZONA SCIENCE TEACHER ASSOCIATION MEETING:
- Meeting will be in Phoenix and it’ll cost the
section about $300 to get involved (enrollment, booth, etc.)
- Brian suggested we may be able to team up with
PASM and split costs. Let’s make
that happen.
- Sara will go. – thanks Sara.
ENGINEERS WEEK:
- Meetings are starting up again.
- Doug May will keep in contact (although may not
be able to attend meetings).
- Let’s continue to be involved but not too
involved. I think we were taken
advantage of last year.
PASM MUSEUM NEWS:
- The entire crew of Endeavor will be at the
Museum in this March for a big event.
- SARSEF is scheduled for March 12-14.
- “Shadow of the Moon” movie will be at ELCON on
Friday Sept. 28th.
- October 4th 6-9pm Mars meeting. TAAA
& other groups involved.
- October 25th-29th Brian
will be out at the X-prize with a booth.
We may be able to get him some AIAA literature and promotional “stuff”
to give out.
- Brian is doing several events for the museum and
he’s always willing to give out AIAA materials.
- Matt to get Brian the old panels from our table
top display to set up in the museum.
Section can provide whatever will be necessary. – thanks Brian.
STUDENT SECTION NEWS:
- Starting up with DBF. Rules came out two weeks ago.
- New missions for the new plane. Team has to carry up to 14 half liter
water bottles or 0.5 pound bricks. Teams
have to fly any combination of bottles and bricks.
- Score is divided by battery weight so that will
be an optimization point.
- We should see if we can get Desert Aircraft
involved. Matt to contact.
- Brian has found some interest at the Kansas
Cosmosphere.
- Matt will be there to help out if needed.
WEBSITE:
- Frank updated the main page with new photos from
kids club & aerial robotics competition.
- We should probably receive a bill for web
hosting soon. No word yet.
AERIAL ROBOTICS:
- Pima made it to the competition. Flew autonomously. Attempted level 1. Almost completed
it. Placed 5th out of
the 15 teams that showed up. UofA
came in 6th place.
- Georgia Tech is in the lead. They did level 3. A few teams accomplished level 2.
- Next year will be the last year for the current
set of rules. Regardless if anyone
wins they’re going to hand out the prize money.
- ECE students are still quite a bit
involved. They built a steerable
antenna.
ASTRONOMY CAMPING TRIP:
- On hold until late a
weekend in May. Location is still
to be determined.
- George suggested
going down to Kitt Peak.
TENTATIVE CALENDAR:
- Glider event in April.
- Doug has a contact at LPL with regard to the
Phoenix program. They are willing
to do tours (control room & briefing).
Perhaps afterwards we can go do a dinner or happy hour or
something.
- Push to do astronomy camp-out in May over a
Raytheon 3 day weekend.
- Distinguished Lecturer at Museum.
- Perhaps another tour from the Museum (AMARC,
A-10s, PINAL).
- Gunnery Range trip – Matt to ask Ed
Palanek. Brian may be able to help
us.
- Tour of Optics Lab at UofA. – let’s look for
contact.
- Professional vs. Softball Tournament &
BBQ. David to ask the students when
and then Matt will set up the rest.
Avoid last Saturday in October.
OFFICER TRAVEL PLANS:
- Sara will go to represent Tucson at the RAC IV
meeting this Saturday. Expected cost will be approximately ($260).
- Matt would like to participate at Congressional
Visits Day (CVD) This April. Matt
will investigate ways to get reimbursement of funding support from AIAA.
Perhaps we can ask for CAT III funds.
This will likely be an expensive trip so we’ll wait to see how much
we get in for CAT I and II before we plan.
- At least one person should represent the section
at the annual AIAA meeting in Reno, Aerospace sciences meeting.
Matt’s Misc. Action Items:
- Bug Marcus about
AIAA video.
- Get out old display
planels to give to Brian to setup at the PASM as a perminant display.
- Expect to get a
newsletter out two weeks after next meeting.
