Meeting Minutes for 7 November 2006
Next meeting is Tuesday, December 5th
at El Parador at 6:00 PM
ATTENDEES:
Matt
Angiulo, Maren McRae, Sara Falconer, Frank Manning, Jason

David Haas, Doug May, John Madden, Amy Rice
KIDS CLUB:
- December 2nd will be at PASM. “aviation”
will be taught by Brian Ewingson
- 31 kids are enrolled. We have 9 on a waiting list.
- Only one session in the spring (April rockets)
- Maybe Chris Discenza can do his session.
- There are 2 open sessions. Sara is looking for suggestions. (hands on!)
- Maybe Serina to do Math games….but we don’t
want to repeat too much.
- Sara needs someone to take responsibility for
the key/building for the January and February sessions. Matt will be
available.
- Sara needs student help.
- Student section officers to send an
invitation/request to their membership.
WEBSITE:
- Frank added info regarding our awards.
- Takahashi’s membership upgrade was posted.
- Added a thing about the Cat III award.
- Sara may try to add some artistic styling to the
pages.
TREASURER:
- Patrick Craine has left town. We now do not have a treasurer.
- Nick Cicchini is considering the treasurer
position.
- Matt deposited 1500 Cat III check and reimbursed
himself for the camera equipment.
- Camera insurance was considered. We should buy it and ask for reimbursement
for the insurance from the other sections that use the camera after this
year.
- Cat II award money is in but not deposited.
- Sara gave Matt checks to deposit from Kids Club
- Matt needs to write a check for $20 and send it
to Sybelle van Erven
AERIAL ROBOTICS
- Started flight testing the drop vehicle
- New control system is being tested.
MEMBERSHIP
REPORTS:
- Membership reports were released this week.
- Many educator associates are 2 weeks past renewal

Many of them signed up
but never participated. Sara is not surprised.

We had 36 (20 joined
last summer).
- 30 student members.
- 5 members have moved into the section since the
last report. We should send them a
welcome letter.

Doug to send Sara their
email addresses.
- Our roster has a total of 311 members. (15 are
two months past) – we should ask them to renew.
STUDENTS VS.
PROFESSIONALS SOFTBALL GAME & BBQ:
- Students won 25 to 10.
- 26-30 people showed up. Everyone had a good time
- We purchased two coolers and BBQ foods (~$200.00
in total expenses)
- Students have suggested doing another one next
semester
- I’d like to get shirts for the next game. We didn’t do that this time.
- At one point in the meeting I was making fun of
the A380 and argued that getting fatter and slower wasn’t the general
trend of technological development.
Amy Rice pointed out the similarity between that statement and
development of the professional softball team.
DISTINGUISHED
LECTURER EVENT & E-Week:
- Gene Austin will speak at PASM on February 22nd
regarding space Tourism.
- Matt to send Sara his bio and synopsis.
- Sara and Frank can email everybody.
- We could do it AME if PASM doesn’t work out.
- Perhaps Gene could ours and the E-week banquet
on the 20th

We could move our date
to the 21st to be more convenient if desired.

NEWSLETTER:
- Articles due on November 14th
- We’ll get the newsletter out in November.
- We need something for engineers week
- Doug to write a membership article
- Sara will write kids club and Astronomy camp out
articles
- Matt will write a Chair’s Corner and a
Distinguished Lecturer article
- Matt will contact Grant Anderson, Linsday Lund,
and Brian Ewingson for articles.
- Frank will write an aerial robotics article
- Student Section will write a DBF article.
- Matt to send John an updated officer roster.

STUDENT SECTION:
- Working on DBF entry (only one team despite
Matt’s objections/ecouragment)
- Saturday is homecoming. During this the students
will participate in the “Jr Scientists Kids Day” at the science and
engineering library.
- AIAA will set up Microsoft flight simulator on
a projection screen.
- Maybe they can do this for kids club?
BORDER SECURITY FORUM:
- Group in Monterey
looks like they’re going to pick it up.
- It seems like we’re off the hook.
- We’re disappointed because this is a good
opportunity for us. There is definite merit for having the event here.
- On the other hand, we need more guidance and
we’re relieved.
- We would still like to participate in some
manner.
MISC:
- Sara declined Program Deputy Director position.
- Doug also has been contacted to be the
membership Deputy Director.
- Sara will be in a show at 10:30 on Thursday
Friday and Saturday Live Theater Workshop. $5.00
- Matt (& maybe Sara) will go to the Reno
Conference.
- make reservations ASAP
- If we have any associate fellow upgrades they
will be recognized at the conference as well.
