Meeting Minutes for August 2006

 

Next meeting is Tuesday, September 5th at El Parador at 6:00 PM

 

ATTENDEES: 

Matt Angiulo, Frank Manning, Patrick Craine, Kevin Kremeyer, Sara Falconer, Doug May, Steve Ratts, Amy Rice,

 

 

KIDS CLUB:

  • We have approval to use LPL
  • 4 sessions confirmed
  • Don McCarthy in October (liquid Nitrogen)
  • Larry Leboski (works in lunar lab) wrote a handbook on how to put a teacher program together for our section.  He’ll do something relating to meteorites, astronomy, etc.
  • Brian Ewingson will do an aviation session at March.
  • April is Rockets with Steve Lubliner.
  • William Bickle has offered to do something in acoustics.
  • Melissa Williams has moved and is no longer our contact.
  • Star lab is not available
  • We may be able to fill all the spots if Chris Dicenza can be contacted.
  • We have a new flyer.
  • Cost will increase to $40 a student.
  • We need someone responsible for the January and the February sessions.

 

WEBSITE:

  • We got a bill for web hosting……$89.00 for 1 year.
  • Need to get updated kids club info
  • Sara suggests that we add a picture or some sort of eye-catcher to the home page.

 

TREASURER:

·        We paid for section insurance for $325.

·        New PO box $30…..We have a new address!

·        We got a bill for web hosting……$89.00 for 1 year.

·        Checking account has $4K

·        We should put about 25% in a CD or money market.

 

 AERIAL ROBOTICS

  • Pima didn’t compete this year because Frank got sick.
  • Frank traveled but none of the equipment got shipped.
  • The most anyone did was level 1.
  • Georgia tech attempted 3 and missed.
  • Virginia tech attempted 2 and failed.
  • We can give Pima Aerial Robotics Club $500.00 to cover travel expenses as the first winner of some Grant program.
  • Turn this into a press release.

 

STUDENT GRANT COMPETITION:

  • Are we going to budget student projects?
    • We could make groups send in budgets and requests and then we can award some money to the best as we see fit.
    • We could make it like a competition.  Maybe we could use it  to get donations and whatnot.
    • We should make this a formal program.
    • Maybe some amount will go to Pima and the Student Section and then the rest will go into the competition.
  • Sara suggests that we make strengthen our officer meetings first.  Another program is too much for our current board.

 

We should do the e-newsletter. As Sara suggests.  Ask for feedback on schedule and more votes. URLs to the webpage.

 

MEMBERSHIP REPORTS:

·        Doug now has access to the membership reports

·        We have 191 regular members but no one is upgrading to senior members.

·        We should encourage upgrading.

·        We could write a newsletter article, e-newsletter article, and put something on the webpage.

·        Sara would like Doug to send her all new members since April to add to our email distribution list.

·        We need to make sure we have the return address on our newsletters so they can write us back.

·        Kevin will ask at the regional meeting if we can send our updated list to Mary Ellen.

 

TENTATIVE SCHEDULE:

  • Student/professional Softball tournament in Fall (Matt to follow up)
  • Camping trip weekend – Spring (Sara to follow up)
  • Ball Park Event.  (Thursty Thursdays) before the season ends (October)?
  • October 28th BBQ softball thing with costumes or November 11th.
  • Tour of something on Campus.
  • At least one Distinguished Lecturer (Matt to get speaker)
    • One for Huachuca in January
    • One for regular membership (think about women, men, young professionals, etc.)
    • Look for a woman DL to come speak at Raytheon.
    • Maybe get Sarsef? Sara to look up.
    • Target Young Professionals and do a speaker on career development.
    • Definitely another event with ASME.
  • We should peruse the glider event (perhaps target for October).
  • We should do a spring BBQ at Tangerine.
  • Could we hold a Mixer at the Titan Missile Museum and have tours.

 


BORDER SECURITY FORUM:

  • Huachuca is kinda taking over.- Which is less responsibility for us.
  • Old Crows still in charge of everything.
  • Pat Craine got no response from CAP – We need Kelly Sinnock to help us.
  • Event is now on January 16-18th or the 23rd-25th.
  • We need 5 or 6 really big names to come in.
  • Maybe someone at Army National guard.
  • Find people from department of homeland security
  • Perhaps DHS people moderating panels.
  • Border Patrol technical people.
  • One hour intro, one 2 hour speaker block till noon.  Break for lunch.  Then do two two hour speaker blocks.  On last day to a 2 hour wrap up session.
  • We need to keep working throughout the month via email. 
  • Sara will provide an outline template.
  • We need an MC to control the panel discussions and cut the power if the questions go long.
    • Frank suggests we have a band start playing, like at the Oscars

 

 

FROM LAST MEETING:

  • AIAA is starting a homeland security program committee
    • Use this to get connections to other organizations
    • Organization of Old Crows (electronic Warfare)
  • Crows want to do a symposium in Tucson in October.
  • Get San Diego, Tucson Section, New Mexico, Texas, and maybe Phoenix
  • Crows does all the registration, hotels, and etc.
  • Crows agreed to give money to the section.  Brian Ewingson has set up space at Pima. Pima would charge 10K-20K
  • We’re shooting for 130 people.  Low entrance cost would be $250.00 a head.  We could also sell display booths for local companies and government organizations.  Free for the government. 
  • Use this as a way to get funds to the sections and the program committee
  • We need to line up a good program with good speakers.
  • Tuesday Wednesday, and Thursday Morning
  • October 10th, 11th, and 12th.
  • Maybe start with a Distinguished Lecturer. Have it be a keynote and open it to the section.
  • Want to have a big band.
  • First session will be something from Policy mentioning what the government wants to accomplish for the money.
  • The next session would be the people on the ground (the people doing the work) talk about what they’re able to do.
  • Then we note the mismatch between what’s wanted and what’s available.
  • Then we bring in DOD centers say how they can help bridge the gap.
  • Last day have a panel discussion.
  • Contact National Guard, Border Patrol, and Civil Air Patrol for speakers
  • Give this a month and try to pull in speakers.  Contact San Diego (Kevin Burns) and coordinate planning.
    • Pat to try to get a speaker from Civil Air Patrol
      • Ask Kelly for contact information.
    • Sara to try to get Grijalva. 
    • Matt to try distinguished Lecturers and look for National Guard and Army
  • Kevin to provide Sara with a writeup, with mission statement
  • Kevin to attend the next set of meetings,
  • Kevin to provide Matt with contact information.
  • Kevin to contact Fort Huachuca for guy to talk about capabilities.
