Meeting Minutes for November 2005

 

Next meeting is Tuesday, December 6th.

 

ATTENDEES: 

Matt Angiulo, Sara Falconer, Frank Manning, Patrick Craine,

George Platanitis, Jennifer Platanitis, Maren McRae

 

TREASURER:

  • Kids Clubs checks and Cat III/IV reimbursement checks are deposited. ($1291.30)
  • Award checks are pending last years budget submittal.
    • All changes made.
    • Signed by Matt Angiulo and Pat Craine.  Matt to take to budget to PMAM to get Kevin Kremeyer’s signature.
  • Account Balance $4248.03

 

KIDS CLUB:

  • 30 kids signed up,
  • October 29th was the next session. Rockets at PASM.
    • Pima aspect went great and they didn’t charge us.
    • A lot of people were watching; we should have display read for these public things.
  • Nov 19th “No Shirt, no shoes, no air, no prob” at PASM
  • Jan 21st or Feb 18th(?) is a Solar Weather and Astronomy session
    • TAAA will show up with telescopes
    • Steve Ratts and Melissa Williams from the Flandreau to organize
    • Matt A to support in Sara’s absence.
  • Kevin has a contact to handle the other session (Jan or Feb)
  • Pat Craine knows a Professor that does a Gravity presentation
    • Sara believes that will work for a joint session (several 20 min presentations)
    • Doug May can present his pendulum session.
    • Students can do a wind tunnel presentation
  • March is “Mars” and April is “Rockets”
  • Girl scouts may want us to participate in the SMART program.
  • Steve Lubliner is doing Rockets with the Boy Scouts
  • Sara wants to see if she can get the “Physics Bus” to her local elementary school.
  • Sara wants AIAA to underwrite her Science-like production for elementary school kids. 
    • (She’s thinking about this)
  • Sara will go to Reno. (fly in Monday and leave Thursday).
  • Sara will write an update for the newsletter.

DISTINGUISHED LECTURER

·        We have currently have a request for one of three speakers:

o       Scott Miller to talk on “World of Secret Flight”

§         This would be good for Raytheon

o       John McMasters on “Airplane Design; Past, Present, & Future”

§         This would be good for the UA Student Section

o       William Chana on “Spirit of St. Louis” or “Wee Bee”

§         This would be good Raytheon, UA, or PASM (if Wee Bee)

·        Schedule will hopefully be finalized by November 16th so that we can advertise in the newsletter

 

WEBSITE:

  • Minutes are now posted on the webpage.
  • Kids Club calendar is updated
  • Kids Club pictures are requested.
  • Frank is going to look into moving the site to the permanent AIAA webspace.

 

NEWSLETTER:

  • We'll get the next Newsletter out in December
  • Next set of articles due on November 16th
  • Distinguished Lecturer article (and flyer)
  • Advertise Mixer (and flyer)
  • We still have the Wind tunnel and Build Space articles
  • Different types of articles from different chairs....try to focus
  • - Thats what they grade us on.

 

HOLIDAY PARTY MIXER Picnic:

  • Skyboxs are all sold out.
  • We can do a mid day BBQ and Picnic instead.
  • Pat to arrange a softball tournament.
    • Student section already has a team.
    • We’ll come up with some prizes for the winning team.
  • Do something for Kids. Maybe Santa?
  • Should do it on Saturday December 3rd. (or the following week)
  • We should look at the membership list to see where to do the picnic.
  • Matt suggests Randolph Park.

 

INSURANCE:

  • Pat Craine has sent it in.  Issue closed.

 

SOUNDING ROCKET PROGRAM:

  • Send info to dougmay@gmail.com
  • Romahalli never responded
  • George P. to look into that.

 

 AERIAL ROBOTICS

  • Pima has got a new member (10 total including 2 girls)
  • Computer science professor (UA) is helping out with machine vision.
  • Overall system architecture. (2 plane system)
    • One plane may have to do an autonomous take-off
  • Pima wants to request money from UofA.
  • Frank to write an aerial robotics section for the newsletter.

 

STUDENT SECTION:

  • Matt attended a student section meeting and advertised our programs.
  • Students suggested making repairs and modifications to the wind tunnel
    • Matt suggested that they design experiments and a presentation for a future kids club session.
    • Students will prepare a proposal for what they intend to do and will highlight schedule and cost aspects.
  • Students want to be involved in our mixer but won’t be able to attend if it’s on December 10th, since that’s the weekend before finals.

 

ACTION ITEMS:

  • Matt to find someone regarding GBU-15 that may want to volunteer with Pima guidance.
  • Matt to see about a permanent AIAA display at Pima.
